Black Girls Surf
“Black Girls Surf” is a project turned movement that aims to introduce and train girls/young women of the African diaspora for professional surfing competitions. The movement started out of the lack of representation needed to host contests with female participants in the African continent. “Africa has been chosen as the next surfing destination worldwide and indigenous Africans need to be prepared to compete,” says Rhona. Education is also a priority and in order to form part of the Black Girls Surf program all girls must also be in school. The organization has set up a fundraiser which has raised enough for all the participants to attend.
